With the average tenure of the chief marketing officer dropping to 40 months – the lowest since 2009 – being CMO in 2021 is no easy task.

For the sixth year in a row, Insider identified a number of top consumer brand marketers who feel up to the opportunity. They face new challenges amid the pandemic while guiding their companies’ responses to issues of racial injustice.

They’re also helping their companies cope with other seismic changes in advertising, from Apple and Google’s privacy changes making it harder to target ads, to the advent of new media like streaming and gaming.

Our selections represent a cross section of industries and established brands as well as challenger brands and include some that were featured in previous years.

We pinned the list through nominations, reports, and input from the founder of brand strategy firm Chief Brand Advisory, Brad Kay. Jenny Rooney, managing director of CMO consulting firm Black Glass; and Alain Sylvain, founder and CEO of the strategy and design consultancy Sylvain.
